| Mya, the day I brought her home. |
Mya was and is my first horse. She was a gift and one of the best at that. Mya was given to me two years ago. I had always wanted a horse, but I wasn't able to get one until my parents were sure I would be able to take care of it on my own. I think back now and say that was a good decision. Neither of my parents knew anything about horses. So when I was finally old enough and knowledgeable enough I was aloud to get one. It was a chilly February day when I got the call about Mya. That call was from my neighbor. This neighbor loved horses but had four of them at the time. The other three were gaited horses which is what they liked. They had heard I was looking for a horse so they offered me their quarter horse for free. I said yes right away. That evening I brought her home to her shiny new stable. The stable was brand new and had just been completed a few days before. Mya was certainly not a good looking horse at the time. She was scrawny from lack of exercise, thin, and had mats in her mane. No, she wasn't nice looking. But she was mine! I knew with a good grooming and a healthy diet she would soon be looking better. And I was right! She isn't what you call an easy keeper; she needs regular attention to keep her healthy. I think Mya and I were meant for each other. I love to spend hours grooming her, and she loves to be groomed! She is now a beautiful horse. People compliment her all the time. But I know where she came from and what she once looked like. Because of Mya I learned to look past the skin of a horse to see its potential. Mya is a very special horse and she just needed some one to give her a chance. Horses like her now have a special place in my heart. There are many horses out there that have undiscovered talent; they just need someone to find it! Next time you go shopping for a horse look for talent not just how pretty or fancy they look. Your auction horse, your rescue horse, or your free horse might be the most amazing of them all.
